Colorado Drivers License Points – How Many Points Do I Have?

In Denver traffic law and the Colorado driver’s license point system, there are a number of ways a driver can lose their driving privileges.

Under Colorado traffic law, everyone starts out with a clean driving record, however, if a driver accumulates too many points against their driving record, within a certain time period (please see below) their driver’s license will be suspended.

Each time an individual is convicted of a traffic violation in Denver, the applicable county or municipal court will notify the Denver, Colorado Department of Revenue Motor Vehicle Division, and the specified number of points received will be posted on the individual’s driving record. A conviction occurs when: a person pleads guilty, acknowledges guilt by paying a ticket, accepts a conviction as a result of a plea agreement, or in some circumstances, by default judgment due to the individual failing to appear in Court or pay the ticket.

Each type of conviction causes a certain number of points to be placed on a Denver traffic record. Generally, the more serious the violation the greater number of points associated with it.

Points assessed against a Denver traffic record are not erased when an individual obtains a new license or when the license is reinstated. Although older points may no longer have any significance in relation to a potential point suspension, they do not expire over time and will therefore remain on a Colorado driver’s record.

How Many Points are on a Colorado Drivers License?

It is very common to wonder how many points are on your Colorado drivers license, but the correct question is: How many points will lead to a suspeded drivers license? The number of points accumulated within a designated time period that will cause a suspension of a Colorado driver’s license, are as follows:

MINOR DRIVERS (UNDER 18 YEARS OF AGE):

  • 6 points in any 12 consecutive months
  • 7 points during the period of the license

MINOR DRIVERS (AGED BETWEEN 18 AND 21):

  • 9 points in any 12 consecutive months
  • 12 points in any 24 consecutive months
  • 14 points during the period of the license

ADULT DRIVERS (AGED 21+):

  • 12 points in any 12 consecutive months
  • 18 points in any 24 consecutive months

CHAUFFEUR POINTS:

  • 16 points in any 12 consecutive months
  • 24 points in any 24 consecutive months
  • 28 points in any 48 consecutive months

Colorado Driver’s License Chauffeur Violations

It is important to remember that to be applicable, all chauffeur violations must have been received by a driver whilst they were using a motor vehicle that was in use as a public or common carrier (of people or property). If the driver did not receive all the points whilst they were operating a vehicle that was in use as a public or common carrier (of people or property), the point totals for an adult driver (non-chauffeur) will apply.

“Ross helped me remove citation from my record. I am Nebraskan who was wrongfully ticketed by Colorado State Troopers. Good job Ross, your help is appreciated…. As for Colorado State Troopers, nothing nice can be said about them, bunch of arrogant pricks ….do not pay their tickets…..hire Ross, he will fight them…”

Ross vs State Troopers

“I recently retained the services of Ross Koplin for a traffic violation in Aurora, CO. He is very professional and very knowledgeable. He kept me informed throughout the whole process and the outcome was beyond my expectations. He is worth it.”

Amazing Results

“Ross Koplin was a huge help on my traffic case. He is highly professional, kept me up to date on the case, always listened to my concerns, spent the extra time and effort in working with the DA to come to a more than reasonable conclusion and came through in helping me keep my license. What impressed me the most was that he always answered the phone – I was never sent to voice mail or had to wait for a response – something hard to find in this day and age. I would highly recommend Ross Kolpin. I feel lucky to have found him. I can’t say Thank You enough!”

I Would Highly Recommend Ross Koplin

“I hired Ross to represent me in a Displaying Fictious Plates traffic case and I am more than satisfied with the outcome he was able to provide. Ross kept me updated and in contact throughout the entire process and in the end got my case reduced down. I’m a very happy client and Ross did an AMAZING job representing me in this matter, I highly recommend him! Thanks again Ross!”

Excellent Job!!

“I could not more highly recommend Ross Koplin if you have a serious traffic matter. I was charged with 28 points of violations, including two hit and run allegations arising out of the same event. Ross represented me both at the meeting with the DPD and in court. Ross succeeded in getting all of the charges dismissed – all 28 points. He has a strong knowledge of the law and, more importantly, a very strong knowledge of the traffic/criminal process and how to maneuver through it.”

Excellent Lawyer

“I got a speeding ticket….24 mph over the speed limit. I had also gotten a ticket 2 months prior so this was not a good situation. I hired Ross because I felt the ticket was unjust and the officer said I was going faster than I actually was. I gave the paperwork to Ross and I had to do nothing but wait. He handled everything and was able to get my points drastically reduced with a minimum court fine. I hope I don’t need his services again but if I do, I know he will take care of it.”

Very Pleased
